This summer 7 interns will take part in an immersive learning experience being a part of a planned giving shop at a variety of non-profits.  The gift planning offices at:

  • University of Illinois Foundation,
  • Virginia Tech,
  • Boston College,
  • Howard University,
  • Oregon Community Foundation in partnership with Oregon State University,
  • Jewish Federation of Chicago, and
  • Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation at Taliesin West

will all welcome interns starting June 5th – July 28th.

The internship initiative is an important part of the work of PGI to help introduce students to the idea of a career in planned giving.  Commonly, individuals fall into the work of planned giving from a sort of side door, so to speak – evolving into it while being a part of a development staff and transitioning or some other indirect path.  The idea of creating a front door to the field is the genesis behind the internship idea.

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has designed and leads an expertly planned internship program in advancement, and so it seemed fitting for PGI to partner with them when implementing the idea.  The PGI-funded interns follow the CASE 8-week agenda and spend about 20% of their time with CASE education opportunities in career-building, networking and peer-to-peer engagement, while spending the greater majority of their time doing organizational work and gaining hands-on learning from a knowledgeable sponsor at their organization.

Placing the intern to work hand-in-hand with an established rock star of planned giving to provide the greatest learning environment was essential and was an important consideration when identifying locations for placing planned giving interns.  A commitment to organizations in academia but also outside of academia in a diverse variety of service organizations was also a priority.  As such, in addition to the previous summer interns at University of Illinois Foundation, Virginia Tech and Boston College, PGI added Howard University, the Oregon Community Foundation in partnership with Oregon State University, the Jewish Federation of Chicago, and the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation at Taliesin West for the summer of 2023.

To provide continuity to hosts and their programs, each internship is funded for 3 years.
